Teeth darken with age, tea, coffee, tobacco and some medicines. Whitening (also called bleaching) lightens the colour of natural teeth using a peroxide gel. It is one of the most searched-for cosmetic dental treatments, and also one of the most commonly offered by people who are not qualified to do it. This guide explains the options, the risks and what has been reported about prices in Kenya.

How whitening works

According to McGill University's Office for Science and Society, most bleaching products contain carbamide peroxide, which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea. The hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient: it oxidises the molecules that cause staining inside the tooth, changing the tooth's actual colour. Whitening toothpastes work differently. They contain mild abrasives and chemicals that remove surface stains, which can make teeth look brighter but does not bleach them.

The options

Whitening at the dental surgery. A dentist applies a protective barrier to the gums, then a strong peroxide gel to the teeth, sometimes activated with a light or laser. It is usually completed in a single appointment.

Dentist-supplied home trays. The dentist takes impressions and makes custom-fitted trays, then prescribes a gel you wear at home. The NHS says this typically takes two to six weeks and includes a fitting appointment to check the trays and advice on how often to wear them and how to protect your gums.

Shop-bought and online kits. Pharmacy strips, pens and kits contain much weaker gel. The NHS does not recommend them, noting they are less effective and may be harmful if misused. Any kit that promises dramatic results at home is worth treating with suspicion.

Beauty salons and social-media sellers. In Kenya, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council warned in November 2024 that unregistered premises were offering teeth whitening and braces, and that only licensed practitioners in registered facilities may provide such services. The NHS gives the same advice for the UK: whitening is a form of dentistry, and the strong chemicals involved should only be used or sold by dental professionals.

Side effects and who should avoid it

The NHS lists the common side effects as sensitivity to cold or sweet foods, sore gums or throat, and temporary white patches on the gums. These usually settle, but McGill notes that improper application, particularly leaving gel on for too long, has caused irreversible damage in some cases. A dentist controls the concentration and contact time, which is the main reason to have it done professionally.

The NHS says whitening is not recommended for people aged 17 or under, people with unhealthy teeth or gums, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Whitening only lightens natural tooth tissue, so crowns, veneers, fillings and implants keep their original shade and may look mismatched afterwards. If you have visible dental work at the front of your mouth, discuss this before you start.

Results are not permanent. The NHS says that with good care they may last around three years, less if you smoke or drink a lot of tea, coffee or red wine.

Concentration limits

Kenya does not publish a consumer-facing limit for peroxide strength that we could verify. For comparison, the Dental Council of Ireland's code of practice, which follows European rules, permits products releasing up to 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide (roughly 17 per cent carbamide peroxide), requires the first application in each course to be carried out by a dentist, and bars use on anyone under 18. If a seller cannot tell you what is in the gel, do not use it.

What whitening costs in Kenya

Published Kenyan prices are scarce. A Business Daily feature in April 2021 reported in-clinic bleaching at around KES 50,000 at a Nairobi cosmetic practice, alongside figures for veneers. That is one clinic in one year; prices vary considerably by city, by clinic and by method, and dentist-supplied home trays usually cost less than a laser session. Ask for a written quote that states the method, the number of sessions, whether home trays and gel refills are included, and what happens if you get sensitivity.

A professional clean (scaling and polishing) removes surface staining and is far cheaper; the Social Health Authority's tariff for it is KES 1,200 within the annual household dental limit. Many people are satisfied with a clean alone, so it is a sensible first step.

Questions to ask

  1. Are you a KMPDC-licensed dentist, and is this a registered facility? Text P# and the dentist's name, or H# and the clinic's name, to 20547 to check.
  2. Will you examine my teeth and gums first, and treat any decay or gum disease before whitening?
  3. What peroxide concentration and contact time will you use?
  4. How will my existing fillings or crowns look afterwards?
  5. What should I do if sensitivity is severe?

When to see a dentist

See a dentist before whitening if you have sensitive teeth, bleeding gums, visible decay or dental work on front teeth. See a dentist promptly after whitening if pain is severe or lasts more than a few days, if gums blister or peel, or if a tooth turns darker rather than lighter, which can signal a dead nerve that needs treatment rather than bleaching.
