Root canal treatment removes infection from inside a tooth so that the tooth can be kept rather than pulled out. According to the NHS, the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) can become infected through decay, gum disease, a crack or an abscess. Without treatment the tooth may need to be extracted.

Many people in Kenya hear "root canal" and think first about the bill. This guide explains what has been published about prices, what the treatment actually involves, and how to make a treated tooth last.

What is known about root canal prices in Kenya

There is no official tariff for root canal treatment in Kenya, and clinics set their own fees. The published evidence is thin and partly dated, so use it only as a rough guide:

  • A 2016 Strathmore University MBA dissertation by Eric Ochieng costed services at two individually owned dental clinics in Nairobi County. It estimated the actual cost of providing a root canal at about KES 3,596 at one clinic and KES 4,095 at the other, and found that the prices patients were charged "mostly revealed huge mark ups" over those costs.
  • A personal blog on Abacus.co.ke (undated) collected patient-reported fees: root canal treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital was described as roughly KES 3,000 to 7,000, at Africa Coptic Hospital about KES 5,000, and at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Kayole between about KES 1,000 and 2,500. The same post reported consultation fees of around KES 500 at public hospitals and KES 1,000 to 2,000 at larger private hospitals. These are anecdotes, not a price survey.
  • A root canal tooth often needs a crown afterwards, which is billed separately. Business Daily reported in 2016 (updated 2020) that crowns cost about KES 10,000 per tooth at Kenyatta National Hospital and KES 25,000 to 40,000 at private clinics, depending on material.

The Social Health Authority's oral health package does not list root canal treatment; it covers basic items such as extraction and simple restorations, within a KES 2,000 annual household limit. So most people pay out of pocket or through a private insurer's dental rider.

Fees vary with the tooth (back teeth have more root canals and take longer), the clinic's location, whether a specialist called an endodontist does the work, and whether X-rays, the temporary filling and the final crown are included. Ask for a written, itemised quote.

What happens during treatment

The NHS describes the steps as follows: the dentist numbs the area with local anaesthetic, drills a small opening in the tooth, removes the infected pulp and drains any abscess, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canals, and then fills and seals the tooth. If the tooth was badly damaged, a crown is fitted to protect it.

Treatment usually takes two or more appointments of one to two hours each, with a temporary filling placed between visits. You should not feel pain during the procedure, although your face may stay numb for several hours afterwards, and the area can be sore for up to a couple of weeks.

Why the crown matters

A large study published in the Journal of Dental Research in 2022, led by the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University, followed more than 46,000 patients treated in community dental practices in the United States. Teeth that received a root canal survived a median of 11.1 years. Teeth that were then restored with both a filling and a crown lasted about 20 years, teeth with only one of the two lasted around 11 years, and teeth with no restoration afterwards lasted only about 6.5 years.

The practical lesson: a root canal without the final restoration is unfinished treatment. If the crown is beyond your budget this month, ask the dentist how long the temporary filling can safely stay and plan for the crown.

Root canal or extraction?

Extraction is cheaper up front: the SHA tariff for a simple extraction is KES 650, and the Strathmore dissertation estimated the cost of providing an extraction at about KES 1,536 to 1,625 in 2016. But a missing tooth can shift neighbouring teeth, make chewing harder and eventually lead to a bridge, denture or implant, all of which cost more than the root canal would have. For a tooth that can be saved, saving it is usually the better value over time.

Aftercare

The NHS advises taking paracetamol or ibuprofen for soreness, avoiding knocks to the mouth, attending follow-up appointments and keeping up normal brushing and check-ups. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until the permanent filling or crown is in place.

When to see a dentist

See a dentist promptly if you have toothache that lasts more than two days, pain when biting, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, a swollen gum or cheek, or a bad taste in the mouth. Seek emergency care if swelling spreads to the eye or neck or makes it hard to breathe or swallow.

Before you book, you can confirm that a dentist is licensed by texting P# followed by their name to 20547, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council's SMS service.

This guide is general information and not medical advice. The prices mentioned come from a 2016 dissertation and undated patient reports; current fees vary by clinic and city, so confirm directly with the clinic.
